SABRE SQUADRON, WEST HOUSTON AIRPORT AWARDS ANNUAL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP TO THE POWERED FLIGHT ACADEMY

Houston, TX – Captain Ric Walters, Commander of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) West Houston SABRE Squadron visited the Wing’s Powered Flight Academy in Big Sandy, Texas to recognize the winner of Major Robert E. Fuller and Colonel Dave Rex Memorial Scholarship to the CAP Texas. The annual SABRE Squadron scholarship is named in memory of two deceased members of the West Houston SABRE Squadron who dedicated their lives to serving our nation in the armed forces and CAP, and especially encouraging youth to become involved in aviation.

The winner, Ty Gunnlaugsson from Benbrook, TX is a 3rd year Cadet in CAP with the Diamondback Composite Squadron at Spinks Airport in Fort Worth. Cadet Gunnlaughsson competed with numerous other Cadets in Texas, and was one of sixteen selected to attend the Flight Academy. After being selected for the Academy, he took the opportunity to compete with other selectees for the Fuller/Rex scholarship, and was chosen by the Scholarship Committee as the winner. Ty will be a Senior at Western Hills High School in Ft. Worth next fall, with plans to study Aerospace Engineering in college then join the U.S. Air Force. Ty has been active with CAP both as a Cadet and previously with their JR ROTC program. He attended the CAP Texas Wing Glider Academy in 2010 and has several hours experience in both Gliders and Cessna 172 airplanes. He qualified at the academy to solo in a C-172 and further his quest to achieve a pilot’s license.

Captain Walters said that Sabre Senior Squadron is delighted to be able to continue support to our cadets, and has now sponsored these scholarships for 10 years.
